Human Digestion Plan

Using the notes posted in your google classroom and your textbook, we will cover the human digestive system.

  • Identify the six basic nutrients (review chap 2 notes).
  • Identify the role of fiber (cellulose) (review chap 2 notes)
  • Describe the purpose and functioning of the digestive system
  • Explain the relationship between mechanical and chemical digestion
  • Identify the major organs and glands of digestion and describe their role in the digestive process
  • Trace the path of food through the human digestive tract

“All organisms, regardless of their size or complexity, must have some way of obtaining essential nutrients, the basic raw materials they need to make their own structures, perform their life functions and obtain energy for survival”. We get these essential nutrients from several different food sources.

The Need for Digestion – humans are heterotrophs and eat substances made by other organisms which are not suitable for human tissues.  Therefore they must be broken down and reassembled.  A second reason is that many molecules in foods are too large to be absorbed in villi of intestine.  They have to be broken down into smaller form that can be absorbed by diffusion, facilitated diffusion, or active transport.

“The digestive system breaks down the food masses into useful substances that can be absorbed into bloodstream (we will cover this in chapter 9) and transported to the cells of the body”.

Using your notes (provided) and the videos I posted, please work on the following:

Read 11.1 and answer #’s 1-5 on page 358

Read 11.2 (pages 359-373) and answer #’s 1-4, 8 & 9  on page 373

A sheet of questions for you to work on (voluntarily) to help you get key ideas/concepts.  I will post answers to these questions as we move along (This will be in the digestion folder)

Assignment (This will be in the digestion folder)

– describe the events of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis (the cell cycle)

– explain the importance of maintaining a constant number of chromosomes through the processes of cell and organism reproduction

Describe meiosis (313-2)

– describe the events of meiosis (reduction-division) and cytokinesis

– explain the necessity of chromosome reduction during the production of sex cells

– describe the crossing-over process and explain its role in helping randomize the gene combinations for sex cells

Using your notes (provided) and the videos I posted, please work on the following:

Read 14.1 and answer #’s 1, 2, 6, 9, & 11 on page 469

Happy Friday!

  • Math 300

If you know of anyone who has NOT joined the google classroom, please tell them to e-mail me or join.  I will be contacting them if they haven’t done so by Monday.

Thank you to all those who e-mailed or responded to our questions. It seems like it has been forever since we were sitting together enjoying math. Our plan for next week (starting Monday April 6) will be to go back and review chapter 1. We have already gone through 1.1, 1.2 & 1.3 but we will go back and review it (as it has been a while). I have posted notes in the classwork section under Chapter 1 as well as some videos to refresh your memory. Remember that there is a link to the book on-line as well as the on-line quizzes to help you. I will be posting Monday with problems/work for you to complete. Please check back on Monday! Have a great weekend and stay safe!521

  • Bio 521

As I am sure you are aware, classes will resume on Monday, but strictly from home.
Biology teachers have decided that the most important unit to address for the remainder of Biology 521 will be how the body maintains homeostasis. This involves the circulatory, respiratory, digestive, and excretory systems. (chapters 9-11 in our textbook).
I have posted notes on each of the sections in our NEW google classroom (if you haven’t joined the classroom please do so before Monday.  If you do NOT have the code, please e-mail me). The notes may be more detailed than you need but it’s better to have more than less.

Here is my plan:
Each Monday, I will post objectives/questions/possible worksheets/videos for the week which will help you understand how the above systems work.
Unfortunately, my tech skills are minimal and you will have to watch videos of others explaining concepts rather than hear my EXCELLENT stories, puns and jokes.  Do not feel the need to do biology all at once – break it up into chunks so that you do not get overwhelmed. If you run into trouble, send me an email and we can work through it.
Be safe and stay positive

  • Bio 621

I am looking for an e-mail address or contact for both Carson AND Kaylee.  Please get them to contact me….. AND join google classroom!

I have posted our tentative plan on google classroom today PLUS a question:

Can you please look over our plan for resuming biology and tell me where you want to start? How you feel about my endocrine system question?

  • describe mitosis (313-2)

– describe the events of interphase, mitosis, and cytokinesis (the cell cycle)

– explain the importance of maintaining a constant number of chromosomes through the processes of cell and organism reproduction

  • Describe meiosis (313-2)

– describe the events of meiosis (reduction-division) and cytokinesis

– explain the necessity of chromosome reduction during the production of sex cells

– describe the crossing-over process and explain its role in helping randomize the gene combinations for sex cells

Hello everyone!

I hope this post finds you all safe and sound, yet eager to get back to learning!

We are still waiting on our last directives from the DELL before we get back to it.

I have some updates for you.  I am currently in the process of creating a google classroom for each of our classes.  I have already started one for the Biology 621 so those individuals should have joined by now.

I have taken over Mrs. Minnis Math 300 google classroom but my math class from first semester will have to join.  Please do so as soon as possible.

Biology 521 will start in the next couple of days!

Please be patient with me and feel free to offer any advice that you think will help me with this learning curve.

I will CONTINUE to keep BOTH my blog and the google classroom until I am comfortable with google classroom.

For now, I need some help from you…………

I have a few questions if you could respond by the end of Wednesday. Do you have high speed internet at home? Do you have a computer, laptop, tablet, chromebook, etc. that you could work on from home? Do you share this device with your parents and/or siblings? We are trying to determine the best way to communicate with students next week. ALSO, can you please send me your e-mail addresses (school and other if I need to get info out) so I can create a master list. Can you get back to me by Wednesday? Also, please be patient with my learning curve! 😉

my emails are:

tdmcgee@edu.pe.ca      AND/OR    tdmcgee@cloud.edu.pe.ca

Remember to follow the guidelines set out by Dr. Morrison.  Stay safe!!!!!

March 24, 2020

Happy Tuesday!

I wanted to reach out to you all and let you know that I am desperately missing seeing and teaching you all (and not because I am stuck home with my 10 year old and 7 year old 🙂

I am looking forward to getting back to school whenever it is safe to do so!

I am closely following the directives from the Department of Education and will keep you updated when I know more about what actions/direction we are taking.

For now I have some suggestions (as I always do):

Stay safe! Wash your hands and PLEASE follow the social distancing recommendations set out by Dr. Morrison

Wash your hands!!!

Enjoy this time with your family 🙂

Do chores around your house (cook, dishes, vacuum, toilets, laundry, etc)

Connect with your friends on your social media options (FB, instagram, etc).  You know that I don’t know about half of these 🙂 BUT please do NOT visit them! 🙂

You can check the Public Schools Branch for home learning resources

Read, read, read and then read some more…..

If you are in biology you can always read ahead in your textbook for FUN.   BECAUSE you remember that BIOLOGY is FUN!!!!!

12’s – we are doing chapters 12, 13, 15, 14, 16….. (look at course outline)

11’s – we are doing chapters 1-6, 9, 10, 11 …. (look at course outline)

If you are in math, you can always go back and practice problems from the chapters that we have already done…. who doesn’t LOVE practicing math

Remember that we completed chapters 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 6, 4 and are currently finishing chapter 1

REMEMBER I am not telling you that you have to do any of these yet…. just a recommendation if you are desperately missing school/learning as I am

If you have any questions or need to reach me I will check BOTH e-mails at some time during the day
